1998-2003 Saab 9-3 Car Review

Overall Rating 4 Stars
Description
This first generation 9-3 improved on the Cavalier-based 900 with a stronger body, more responsive handling, and better safety and refinement. It's a sound long-term choice to rival A4 or 3-Series.

Saab 9-3 (1998-03)
Road Test
9-3 comes as a family-friendly five-door hatchback, a sportier-looking but no less roomy three-door coupe, and a higher-status convertible. They're all highly reliable, safe and well constructed, and lively to drive thanks to petrol engines ranging from 130bhp to well over 200bhp. Saab do things a little differently, relying on punchy four-cylinder engines with turbo assistance where German rivals would use bigger V6s. These combine with accurate steering and good body control to give pleasing driving, although the fairly heavy bodies mean that 9-3 doesn't feel quite as agile as a 3-Series. The cabin is spacious front and rear (though convertibles sacrifice some rear passenger space for hood stowage), and load space is good. It's very well finished, and the driving position and control layout have few rivals. Equipment is generous, even though base models don't have standard air con. Reliability and durability are well above average. Safety is excellent.
Positive Points
  • Sturdy build and high quality finish
  • Lively engines, especially Turbo models
  • Spacious, comfortable and safe
Negative Points
  • Above-average parts and servicing costs
  • Some mechanical bits inherited from Vauxhall Cavalier
  • Convertibles feel less than rigid at speed
